inspired by a ‘tonka’ truck the client had as a child, the FJ company restores and modifies the toyota ‘FJ49′ into a metallic orange 4×4 for grown-up pursuits. this project represents the realization of two dreams — a father who passed on his knowledge and passion for classic cars, and a son who brought his father’s legacy full circle with the design. this luxury model of the timeless ‘FJ49′ is the ultimate utility vehicle for when it comes to off-road discovery.
the miami-based FJ company’s unique design is influenced heavily by the world of traditional custom hot rods, toy trucks, and ‘land cruisers‘. on completion of its frame-off-restoration, the client chose classic features from various eras to create the ‘tonka truck’s’ custom design: hot rod-inspired orange metallic paint, mickey thompson wheels, cooper discoverer ‘A/T3′ tires, and a jerry can complementing its bright paintwork. the workshop even integrated a bottle opener into the custom front bumper — for chilled refreshments while exploring on hot summer days.
he donor vehicle didn’t arrive with its original engine, which gave the restoration expert license to fully modernize the driving experience. it has rebuilt the toyota ‘3F-E’ engine and coupled it with a five-speed manual transmission. the multi purpose vehicle’s interior is cavernous and clean, blending ‘throwback’ style with modern refinements. its heated corbeau ‘sport’ seats are trimmed in black vinyl, as are the two fold-down seats in the back. a U-POL ‘raptor’ bed liner adds a super-tough coating to the floor, preventing scuffs and scratches, while a marine-grade audio system keeps the music playing, even in wet conditions.
